For Big-Game Anglers, Few Places Carry the Same Gravity as Nova Scotia

Rugged coastline, weather-worn towns, and bluefin the size of small cars—this is where legends take shape. The fish here don’t just feed; they detonate. Perfect waters to field-test the AFTCO Fall 2025 collection.

A crew of anglers assembled with the essentials—fishing gear, camera equipment, and heavy Saiko Pro fluorocarbon leaders ranging from 150 to 300 pounds. The journey began with a flight into Halifax, followed by a six-hour drive south to Wedgeport, the heart of Canada’s tuna country. Outerwear and technical layers packed tight.

Arrival

By the time the harbor came into view, anticipation had already replaced sleep. Three long days on the water lay ahead. The 4 a.m. alarm wasn’t needed—adrenaline did the work.

Wedgeport is a small Acadian fishing village on Nova Scotia’s southwestern coast, once known as the “Tuna Capital of the World.” In the 1930s, it hosted the International Tuna Cup Match, drawing anglers from across the globe to chase giants off these same banks. Today, the legacy remains—weathered docks, working boats, and cold Atlantic water that holds fish capable of rewriting records.

The Fight

Bluefin here feed at arm’s length, crashing baits within reach of the gunwale. Seven-hundred-pound fish move with the grace of predators and the violence of torpedoes. Eighty pounds of drag. Reels screaming. Line vanishing into the deep. Every second a test of focus and endurance.

Since the 1930s, Wedgeport has been synonymous with giants—Atlantic bluefin that test both tackle and nerve.

For generations, crews have chased the same rush: going toe-to-toe with one of the ocean’s most powerful predators.
